Each year falls from height are the single largest contributor to construction fatalities.
The primary goal of the Height and Harness Safety course is to provide knowledge and tools for Workers in the Construction Industry that will enable them to work at height and to use harnesses safely. Trainees will work through the following objectives:

This course takes the place of the previous Site Safe "Working Safely at Height course" and consists of two distinct sections throughout the one-day course.
This course has been developed in recognition of the Departments of Labour's (DoL) Policy on harness use and fall arrest which states that anyone planning, installation or operating fall arrest systems need to be trained to an advanced level to Unit Standard 15757 - Employ fall arrest systems on building and construction sites (or its equivalent). This level of training has traditionally been achieved by attending a specialised two-day Fall Arrest course.
Site Safe, in conjunction with a Height Industry Strategy Group, have lobbied the DoL to clarify their Policy for those Workers (the majority of the industry) who simply "hook-on" and aren't involved in the planning, installation or operation of the fall arrest system (and where attending a two-day specialised course just isn't a practical option). The DoL have clarified that evidence of a more basic level of training is appropriate for these Individuals, provided the system has been designed and installed (with operation supervised) by an Individual with the advanced level of training.
With this Policy clarification in mind, Site Safe have developed our existing height course to meet the needs of these Trainees, and will link the course with Unit Standard 21969 - Demonstrate knowledge of and prepare to use basic safety harness systems on construction sites.
Course Outline
The first part of the course covers understanding the hazard management progress, the range of height hazards and controls that can eliminate or isolate these hazards.
The second part of the course focuses on harness systems used for fall restraint and fall arrest. Trainees participate by demonstrating these systems in a workshop setting and in conducting a practical assessment of work practices to ensure their understanding of harness systems.
This course concentrates on providing Trainees with the practical and basic level knowledge of how to work safely at height. If you are ever required to work in a harness this course will provide Trainees with information on how to safely do that under supervision of a person trained to Unit Standard 15757 level.
This is an interactive, workshop based course where Trainees participate throughout the day. Harnesses, lanyards, ropes, pulleys, slings and other height related equipment are used extensively throughout the course so Trainees learn the correct way to fit/wear equipment if they are required to work at height.
Trainees discuss other relevant topics such as guardrails, safety nets, access to work areas, ladders, EWPs, crane and forklift cages and scaffolding.
Throughout the day, a number of workshops are conducted using harness equipment - Trainees look at employing a basic harness system, constructing a basic anchor and tying a figure 8 knot as well as suspension trauma and top rope rescue techniques.
Trainees are required to have their on-site practices endorsed if they wish to receive recognition of the Unit Standards.
