Construction Industry H&S Representative Training

Things you must bring to the course!

Changes to the Health and Safety in Employment Act that came into effect in 2003 offer Employers several options for involving Employees in health and safety improvements in the workplace. One of the best ways of achieving effective Employee involvement is by electing Health and Safety Representatives.

Companies with 30 or more Employees must have an "agreed" Employee Participation System with Employees. With fewer than 30 Employees an "agreed" system is required if one or more Employees requests it. Health and Safety Representatives can be part of an "agreed" system and they are required under the "mandatory" system when Employees and Employers cannot agree to their own Employee participation system.

For Health and Safety Representatives to carry out their job effectively, they need to be informed about their role, the responsibilities and what the functions of a Health and Safety Representative entail. These functions include:

  • Promoting health and safety and positive employment relations
  • Establishing effective communication that allows Employers and Employees to openly discuss health and safety issues
  • Identifying hazards and Employee concerns and working with Management to solve them
  • Supporting fellow Workers who have been injured

Carrying out these functions will allow Health and Safety Representatives to improve working conditions for Employees and ensure cost-effective management practices for Employers.

Training

Health and Safety Representatives who are elected as part of an Employee Participation System must be trained to carryout their functions. (The HSE Act entitles them to two days paid leave each year to attend an Approved Course.)

Site Safe has developed a Health and Safety Representative course specific to the Construction Industry - relevant and suitable to the work that the Employees and those they represent, do. It is designed to provide information, skills and the tools necessary to ensure a safe working environment. The aim is for Participants to come away from the two day course able to understand and be able to work in partnership with Management, to develop and implement Hazard Management Systems that involve Employees, foster good employment relations and meet legislative requirements.

Site Safe's Health and Safety Representative course has been formally approved by The Department of Labour and is approved under the Health and Safety in Employment Act.
