General Industry H&S Representative Training

Things you must bring to the course!

Changes to the Health and Safety in Employment Act that came into effect in 2003 offer Employers several options for involving Employees in health and safety improvements in the workplace. One of the best ways of achieving effective Employee involvement is by electing Health and Safety Representatives.

Companies with 30 or more Employees must have an "agreed" Employee Participation System with Employees. With fewer than 30 Employees an "agreed" system is required if one or more Employees requests it. Health and Safety Representatives can be part of an "agreed" system and they are required under the "mandatory" system when Employees and Employers cannot agree to their own Employee participation system.

For Health and Safety Representatives to carry out their job effectively, they need to be informed about their role, the responsibilities and what the functions of a Health and Safety Representative entail. These functions include:

  • Fostering positive management practices that protect Workers from injury
  • Creating healthy relationships between Employers and Employees
  • Promoting constructive Employee participation in health and safety management.

All Participants attending the course should have a basic understanding of health and safety management in order for them to get the most from the course.

Training

Health and Safety Representatives who are elected as part of an Employee Participation System must be trained to carryout their functions. (The HSE Act entitles them to two-days paid leave each year to attend an Approved Course.)
