Leadership in Safety Course

Things you must bring to the course!

A one-day course on leadership accountability for senior managers, executives and senior site staff.

The goal of the Leadership in Safety course is to improve the safety culture within an organisation and therefore improve the effectiveness of their health and safety systems.

The Leadership course adopts an accountability model that assists Executives and Senior Managers to clearly define and communicate safety expectations. Accountability includes responsibilities, monitoring actions and providing regular feedback on performance focusing on positive reinforcement, recognition and rewards when responsibilities are met and exceeded.

It is important that the Leadership in Safety course builds on the safety systems and management processes already in place within an organisation. A sound safety system will form the foundation for the responsibilities, monitoring and feedback mechanisms. Monitoring tools such as management reports, have been developed to assist the Management Team in driving their safety culture through their active involvement in safety activities. Four accountability practices are integrated into existing company health and safety management activities. They are:

  1. Defining health and safety responsibilities, performance measure and indicators

  2. Communicating responsibilities to Staff (and Subcontractors)

  3. Monitoring actions

  4. Providing feedback emphasising positive reinforcement.

The Leadership programme assists Management to ensure that existing safety systems are effective. The programme is based on a sound system that includes responsibilities, monitoring and feedback for the following safety systems:

  • Contractor management
  • Emergency planning
  • Safety induction and training
  • Employee participation
  • Plant and equipment safety
  • Accident reporting and investigating
  • Monitoring actions (supervision and audits)
  • Hazard ID and control procedures(including job planning)

Trainees are required to bring with them to the Leadership course, a copy of their companies Safety Manual/Safety System or Safety Programme. These will be used to identify how the principles of leadership are incorporated into their company's existing safety systems.

Assessment: On-course and with a take-home assignment.
