A contractor approval and appraisal management database aimed at lifting health and safety performance and allowing the procurement process to go smoothly went live Thursday 26 April for Canterbury.
The database has been a key component from the Canterbury Rebuild Safety Forum’s work to ensure a high level of safety during the rebuild. A key step to achieve this has been to establish a standard pre-qualification of contractors system. This will enable all involved to understand the capability of each contractor’s health and safety systems and performance. The main contractor stakeholders involved in the rebuild are Arrow International, Fletcher Construction, Hawkins Construction, Mainzeal Construction, and Naylor Love Construction. These five main construction contractors are members of the forum and have agreed to only employ subcontractors who have been accredited to meet an agreed industry health and safety standard.
Named ‘AppCon’, the contractor approval and appraisal management database will enable main contractors to quickly assess subcontractors’ health and safety capabilities. The database provides subcontractors a clear standard to meet. The database will negate duplication of the same plan submission to many contractors as once questionnaires are submitted – results are logged. A traffic light illustration system (where red means health and safety not in place) quickly and easily communicates health and safety competency.
