Welcome to the first issue of Advisor Answers – a summary of the top questions asked of our Safety Advisors this month. We realised that if one person is asking, then others will have the same question – that inspired this newsletter.
I’ve set up a new business, where do I begin when it comes to health and safety?
Having a robust health and safety system is a key part of setting up a new business.
An easy way to think about a robust health and safety system is to break it down into five main parts:
- Policies and procedures: They form your H&S system and provide a structure for your company when it comes to handling health and safety.
- Managing hazards and risks: Under current legislation, business owners and leaders are required to identify, assess and control any risks to workers and any other person that may be affected by their work.
- Managing staff and contractors: A code of conduct, induction and training, and worker involvement are some of the essential elements of your health and safety system when it comes to keeping your people safe.
- Administration: It’s important to keep on top of your system and records once it is in place to remain compliant.
- Health and safety leadership: It’s up to leaders to drive the health and safety culture in any organisation and to create an environment where health and safety is a transparent and approachable part of your company.

Is it essential that I use a harness while using a scissor lift?
According to the WorkSafe Best Practice Guidelines for using Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs), wearing a safety harness is not mandatory right now. However, it is essential to conduct a thorough hazard and risk assessment to determine if there are specific work factors or conditions that would necessitate the use of a harness.
For instance, if there is a possibility of climbing out of the platform or overreaching the guardrail, a harness may be required to ensure safety. Other factors to consider include the height at which the work is being performed, the stability of the platform, and the nature of the tasks being carried out. Additionally, wearing a harness may be a requirement of the PCBU where you are working.
Are there any necessary certifications to ensure I meet safety requirements, particularly when working in schools?
The basic requirements for working in a school environment are the same as any workplace. Your business should have a health and safety management system in place which will ensure your obligations are met. Likewise, any certifications you need will apply to schools (e.g. electrical registration).
However, schools may impose additional requirements (e.g. prequalification, police checks), as part of their processes to ensure the safety of staff and children.
