Site Safe provides feedback on proposed changes to short course training

03 Apr 2025

As one of New Zealand’s largest providers of health and safety training for the construction industry, Site Safe has been closely following the proposals by Waihanga Ara Rau, the Construction and Infrastructure Workforce Development Council, to change short course training.

We support the intent of Waihanga Ara Rau to ensure that those who undertake short course training come away with the skills and knowledge they need to work safely, effectively, and with the confidence that they aren’t putting themselves or their colleagues at risk.

However, after consulting with the Vertical Construction Leaders Group, we have respectfully shared feedback with Waihanga Ara Rau on behalf of our members and customers. We believe that the recommendations of the Short Course Training Project pose certain challenges for the industry, such as potentially unworkable training requirements and delays in training and verification. Additionally, we suggest that the proposed timeline for implementing these recommendations be extended to allow the industry sufficient time to adapt to these changes.

We are working with Waihanga Ara Rau to help ensure the outcomes of the project work for all stakeholders. We will continue to update our members and customers on any further developments and their impacts as the project progresses.

If you would like more information on the Short Course Training Project and its recommendations, these are available on the Waihanga Ara Rau website:
