Using Hypnotherapy to Support Recovery

13 Aug 2025

“Many people turn to alcohol or other substances as a way to cope with life’s stresses and challenges — situations that others might manage without the need for chemical assistance. Over time, these patterns can develop into dependency or addictive behaviours.

Recovery often benefits from a multi-layered approach. For some, this may include a structured recovery programme such as AA (Alcohol Anonymous), NA (Narcotics Anonymous, or CADS (Community Alcohol and Drug Services), alongside techniques that promote relaxation, mental clarity, and positive habit formation. This is where hypnotherapy can play a valuable role.

Hypnotherapy combines elements of mindfulness and guided meditation to help create a calm, focused state of mind. In this state, the subconscious becomes more open to suggestion — allowing new ways of thinking, healthier habits, and constructive coping strategies to take root.

A typical session begins with an induction process, using breathing exercises and relaxation techniques to quieten the mind and body. From there, guided suggestions and visualisations address specific concerns — whether that’s reducing alcohol use, exploring underlying triggers, or building healthier coping mechanisms.

Each person’s experience is unique. Some people enter a deeply relaxed state, while others remain more alert — but in all cases, you remain in control throughout. Most people leave a session feeling at least some benefit, whether it’s a greater sense of calm, new insights, or simply feeling refreshed and recharged”
