Why mastering health and safety is a lifelong pursuit
Jasmine's journey through Site Safe’s Health and Safety in Construction Programme
Introduction
In 2020, Jasmine Addie found herself at a crossroads. Working in a café when Covid hit, she realised she needed to pivot her career path. Her father's experience in construction influenced her decision, and she seized an opportunity with Naylor Love.
Starting as a gateman, controlling site access, Jasmine quickly became intrigued by the health and safety aspects of her role, particularly during inductions. Seeking a role where health and safety could be her sole focus, Jasmine took on the position of Naylor Love’s Health and Safety Cadet. She was drawn to the ever-evolving nature of health and safety, appreciating that it was a continuous conversation with constant room for improvement.
“What I love about safety is that it’s always a conversation. There are rules, of course, but there’s no finish line—you can always improve. That’s why I think ongoing study, to help stay ahead of the curve, is important. And at the end of the day, safety matters for everyone. I believe every industry should prioritise it and be motivated to continue to learn,” explains Jasmine.
Valuing continued learning on the job
Recognising the value of continued learning, Jasmine enrolled in the Site Safe Health and Safety in Construction Programme. Her decision to work towards her certificate was greatly influenced by her positive experiences with Site Safe courses in Queenstown. Encouragement from Kevin “Woody” Wood, one of Site Safe’s Safety Advisors, and being fortunate to receive a scholarship from Site Safe, set Jasmine up to complete the Programme in record time.
Reflecting on her experience during the Programme, Jasmine highlights the Leadership in Safety course as her favourite.
“I really enjoyed the exposure to the different levels and positions in construction and the role safety plays from foreman to director – safety isn’t just one person’s responsibility, and this course made that come to life,” says Jasmine.
Jasmine has successfully integrated the knowledge gained from the Programme into her daily responsibilities onsite.
“A lot of the courses in the Programme provide you with a way to communicate safety, not just the rules, and that’s so important. Finding ways to communicate safety in ways that people will understand and engage with is critical.”
Conclusion
Jasmine wholeheartedly recommends the Site Safe Health and Safety in Construction Programme to others in the industry.
“It’s a great way to build your knowledge and earn a qualification while you do it. Safety is something you can never master, but can always grow in, so it’s great to have so many courses to choose from to build your pathway.
"The graduation event I went to was so heartwarming. Seeing so many people who were proud to have earned their qualifications, especially if learning hadn’t been for them previously, was incredible.
"The Programme is also a great way to build connections with others who are completing it and start to establish a community of safety.”
