Health and Safety in Contracting


This one-day course will help you influence health and safety in the contracting process. This course uses industry specific examples and scenarios to help you understand; the role you play, your responsibilities, the cost benefits, and how to coordinate-cooperate-consult throughout the contracting process.

Target audience

The Health and Safety in Contracting course is designed for those who influence the health and safety decisions in the contracting process, such as: principle and sub-contractors, clients, consultants, managers and others within the construction industry.

How you will be assessed

You will need to complete and submit a take home assignment within 3 months of attending the course.

What the course covers

  • Identify the roles and legal responsibilities in the contracting process
    • Identify the various legal roles and responsibilities in the contracting process
    • Understand how and why the role holders need to consult, coordinate, and cooperate
    • Recognise the consequences of role holders not consulting, coordinating, and cooperating well enough

  • Recognise the benefits of selecting contractors who perform safely
    • Recognise the impact of injuries on the various role holders (involved in the contracting process)
    • Recognise the benefits of selecting contractors based on their H&S performance
    • Understand the need for a H&S culture to reap these benefit
  • Recognise how to get involved and influence each stage of the contracting process
    • Describe what a ‘good practice’ framework for selecting contractors looks like
    • Understand the importance of communication, information sharing and contractor selection for any organisation in meeting their goals for budgets and timelines
    • Identify key project health and safety requirements and how to communicate them to and coordinate them with contractors

    • Recognise the importance of leadership in driving organisational safety culture
    • Improve lead contractor health and safety Key Performance Indicators

What you'll get at the end of the course

  • A Site Safety Card (Passport) that indicates your level of training and gives you access to site (valid for two years)
  • A downloadable and printable E-certificate to celebrate your achievement
  • 7 credits towards the Health and Safety in Construction Programme

Completing this course and passing the assignment means you'll gain site access for the next two years.

Please note: If you are attending a 1 or 2 day Site Safe course then you need to bring with you a form of identification that can be verified (travel passport, birth certificate or residency certificate). This is required by NZQA and the Tertiary Education Commission.
