Environmental Site Management (Online)

The activities we do on site can harmfully impact our local environment. But with some simple changes, we can reduce our impacts, leading to environmentally safe sites.

This two hour fully online course has been developed in partnership with Auckland Council and is designed to improve environmental practices that are happening on small residential building sites. This predominantly includes education on:

Poor erosion and sediment control, which results in sediment flowing into waterways.
Poor on-site waste management, which results in useful material being sent unnecessarily to landfill
Poor chemical and pollutant control practices, which result in pollutants entering waterways and soil (e.g., oil, paint, concrete)
Construction and demolition

Note: Completing this course does not result in issuing or renewing of a Site Safety Card.

Target Audience

The course is suitable for all residential builders and sub-contractors undergoing permitted construction activities. It shows you how to work to best practices and how to maximise the re-use of materials: It helps you to develop:

Good on-site erosion and sediment control practices.
Good on-site waste management practices and diversion of waste materials from landfill.
Best waste and sediment control practice.
Reducing the chance of pollution entering our streams, bush and communities.

At the end of this course, all workers on residential building sites will better understand how to do it right to protect the environment.

Learning Outcomes

Describe the procedures that should be used on-site to protect and improve the waterways environment and lessen the chances of breaching Council regulations.
Describe practices that prevent the environment from becoming contaminated by sediment and/or material originating from building sites.
Explain the impacts of poor waste management, erosion control and sediment management on-site.
Describe the correct actions to take when poor practices are observed.

To complete this course successfully, learners must be able to read and understand conversational English. If you are not comfortable with English comprehension, we recommend attending a classroom course at a Site Safe training centre. Please contact us if you need assistance in choosing the right course for you.

What you'll get at the end of the course

On successful completion you will be emailed a Site Safe completion e-certificate.

To receive a Site Safety Card, you may attend any of our classroom or online courses. When it's time to renew your site access, you don't need to complete the same course again - expand your health and safety knowledge with a different course that's relevant to you. With over 60,000 New Zealand construction workers attending a Site Safe Passport course each year, most major New Zealand contractors require a Site Safety Card for entry to their sites, and as a prerequisite in their tender process.

As Site Safety Cards become more recognised by the horticulture sector, this may become a site access requirement, or a tender prerequisite.
