Health and Safety Advisor of the Year 2017
10 Oct 2017
Each year Site Safe celebrates the hard work of all our health and safety advisors by recognising one individual as the “Advisor of the Year”.
This year David Quintela, a Wellington-based advisor, scooped the 2017 award in recognition of his “passion, commitment and work ethic”.
The award recognises a range of attributes, including team spirit, industry knowledge, and professional performance. Candidates are nominated by their teammates and colleagues and assessed on their personal qualities, contribution to Site Safe and its members, overall performance, and embodiment of Site Safe values.
A critical part of the assessment is the peer ratings, where advisors nominate their top 'go to' teammate.
Central Regional Manager Jeff Strampel says ever since joining the team, David has inspired others with his dedication, enthusiasm and commitment.
“David epitomises the ‘how can I help?’ ethos that we encourage here at Site Safe. He is always looking for ways to step up and support the team and the industry.
“His passion, attitude and work ethic are a huge asset to Site Safe.”
David, whose specialty area is civil construction, says it was an honour to be recognised by his colleagues and the wider organisation.
“I’m just doing what I’m passionate about: empowering, educating and engaging people to improve their own health and safety.
“Whether it’s in a training room or whether it’s through consulting or auditing, it’s all about the ability to empower people to make a difference. That’s what really excites me. I love seeing people eventually ‘get it’ and having that epiphany moment.”
As a Chicano (Mexican American) who moved to New Zealand in 2000 after a successful military career in the United States army, David says a key part of his approach is recognising difference and treating people with respect.
“When I’m at work, I try to see each challenge and each person as an individual, because at the end of the day, everyone and every situation is unique.”
Other high achievers this year included Celeste Erasmus from the Northern team and Ricky Shalders, from Southern, who both received Special Mentions from the judging panel.
Site Safe has a nationwide team of advisors like David who are available for consultancy and auditing.
