Chief Exec update - Autumn 2016

23 May 2016

A lot has changed since my last update, with the biggest change being the new Health and Safety at Work Act that came into force on 4 April. Our message to you is not to panic; if you were operating with great health and safety practice under the old Act then the changes you need to make are probably minimal. For anyone that has been neglecting health and safety then this is a great opportunity to start thinking about what needs to change. Whether you are a company director or starting out as an apprentice, it’s now the time to think about “what is my responsibility”. Everyone has a role to play in health and safety and the new legislation reinforces this.

Our Health and Safety Representative Course has been revised to meet the new legislation and is being rolled out across the country. This course will give you or someone in your business the skills to work with management to develop risk management systems and promote good employment relations. The training course also awards you NZQA Unit Standard 29315.

The Site Specific Safety Plan (SSSP) has undergone a significant upgrade to meet the new legislation and a new edition was launched on 4 April. The new version includes ‘Plain Safe – a straight talking guide’ to assist you in completing the document. The SSSP is ready to download, free from our website. The new document is condensed and easier to use, I’m sure you’ll agree that it's a great improvement.

The Board and I have spent time meeting with groups of members over the last few months to discuss how we can continue to add more value to the industry. We will be further developing this conversation with a wider group over the next few months and look forward to hearing what you have to say.

Our new website and CRM was launched on 11 April and is working well, after a few hiccups! Thank you for your patience. Please take the time to have a look around the new site - content and new resources are always being added so there is always a good reason to stop by. Here are a few of the benefits you'll notice:

  • New safety blog and news section
  • New Health and Safety Act Work Act hub page with all you need to know
  • Easy navigation and improved search features
  • Pay an invoice online
  • Have control your account - edit your subcription preferences.
  • Edit your own bookings

Thanks for taking the time to read this update - please don't hesitate to get in touch with me via comments@sitesafe.org.nz if you have any suggestions or comments.
