Silicosis, summer and hazardous substances

WorkSafe inspectors have done assessment visits to about 100 businesses that work specifically with engineered stone which has been linked to accelerated silicosis.

The latest WorkSafe Update  says inspectors issued notices to about half of the companies to improve their workplace practices for managing silica dust risks.

WorkSafe has also published a new guide to controlling dust using on-tool water suppression with advice on choosing and maintaining a system. 

The Update also includes:

  • guidelines for working during extreme conditions in summer
  • a new asbestos management plan template 
  • a link to an NZTA video about driving while using medication.
  • a link to proposed amendments to hazardous substances regulations being run by MBIE. Submissions close on January 15.
