Breaking down barriers and achieving a recognised H&S qualification
21 Oct 2024
Site Safe’s scholarships help individuals complete the Health and Safety in Construction Programme (HSCP) which results in the New Zealand Certificate in Workplace Health and Safety Practice (Level 3). This qualification gives them the tools they need to achieve greater safety outcomes in their workplace.
Site Safe’s scholarships and the wrap around support provided, are instrumental in empowering individuals to build a safer construction industry, one qualified safety leader at a time.
We understand that once the financial cost is taken out of the equation, balancing work, family, and further education can still be challenging, which is why we offer all our scholarship recipients support as they complete the programme. This is thanks to the invaluable work done by our Learner Support Co-ordinator, Masina Kenworthy.
Masina is part of the Education Team who lead the funding and compliance responsibilities required for Site Safe to be an NZQA Category 1 Private Training Establishment (PTE) as well as supporting the continuous improvement of the learner experience.
With a background in youth support work, Masina focuses primarily on supporting learners of all ages and stages, especially scholarship recipients enrolled in the HSCP.
Masina’s dedication is evident in the personalised support she provides following up with learners and helping them navigate the programme along with Site Safe’s learning facilitators.
Having completed the HSCP herself, Masina understands the learner experience. She takes pride in the success stories of graduates, especially those who have navigated substantial barriers to complete their training.
“Everybody has a time when it's their time to learn, their time to study. Lots of people come to us to do the programme and they're nervous about coming back into a classroom and completing assignments. We often see people who didn't finish school or really hated being in the classroom. I can connect with them because I didn't like school either!” says Masina.
She remembers one learner in particular who was nervous about completing the programme.
“Part of my role is to help break down perceived barriers and give our learners the confidence to unlock their true potential. I helped her to break down whatever barriers she had built up in her mind, and she smashed it.
“To see her at our Evening of Celebration when she graduated. She brought her daughter and her parents along to celebrate. It’s massive to be part of that.”
